When a tree can be saved

• Defect is localized (one limb, one wound) and the rest of the tree is structurally sound.
• Disease is treatable in this species at the current stage.
• Lean is old, stable, and the root plate is intact.
• Root issues are from grade or compaction problems we can actually fix.
• The tree has enough living canopy (~50%+) to support recovery.

When removal is honest

When taking the tree down is the right answer

• Structural failure is likely and the failure target is occupied (house, walkway, driveway).
• Disease is fatal in this species and has progressed past the action window.
• Root plate has lifted or major roots are severed.
• Multiple co-dominant stems with included bark over a structure.
• Treatment cost across the next 3–5 years exceeds reasonable tree value.
