Are you a forward-thinking tree owner? You might already be developing a property with healthy, attractive specimens that naturally thrive in Oklahoma, but are you doing it right?
As leading tree services in Norman, OK, we share this step-by-step guide because we want you to succeed. Here’s exactly how to plant a tree!
1. Choose Just the Right Tree and Location
Does the chosen tree species fit your site’s soil type and the purpose you intend for it? You’ll want to look closely at whether the tree at full size will have plenty of room to stretch out to its full potential. Also, check the sunlight, soil drainage, and underground utilities — and remember to dial 811 before you dig.
2. Prepare the New Tree’s Planting Hole
Dig a space for your new little tree around two or three times greater in diameter than the sapling’s root ball. Don’t go any deeper; stay at the height of the root ball to ensure proper root expansion and prevent the tree from sinking too low.
Done digging? Don’t put in the tree! First, fill the hole with water to check that the soil drains adequately.
Often, tree planting benefits from some compost or sand for structural support.
3. Inspect and Position the Root Ball
Does the root ball feature tangled or damaged roots? Gently trim away problem spots.
Now, set the tree with the top of the root ball just barely above ground level. Keeping the trunk centered and straight, fill the hole. Push down on the soil a bit to wedge everything into place.
4. Backfill With Care
Refill the planting hole with the same soil you dug out. Only use soil amendments for particularly poor soil, as over-enriching can hinder vigorous root spread.
Backfill the soil in layers, watering each one to eliminate air pockets from under your tree.
5. Water Thoroughly
With the tree planted, thoroughly water the entire root zone. Thereafter, follow a consistent watering schedule.
Depending on rainfall and soil type, weekly watering for the sapling’s first year should do fine.
6. Mulch for Moisture and Protection
Next, layer around four inches of mulching material around the tree’s base, leaving a couple of inches around the trunk to prevent rot.
Quality mulch, like bark or wood chips, holds moisture and curbs weeds.
7. Stake the Tree (If Needed)
Consider tree staking in windy areas and for top-heavy trees with weakened trunks.
Arborists usually secure the trunk with flexible ties, placing the stakes outside the root zone. They remove stakes after one growing season to allow the tree to strengthen through natural flexibility.
8. Post-Planting Care
Trim dead or damaged branches when planting and watch for signs of stress, like yellowing or wilting leaves. Avoid fertilizing in the first year.
Focus on watering and root establishment, gradually reducing the watering schedule.
